폴이 비틀스가 해체될 때 쓴 곡이다. 폴은 15살 때 잃은 어머니 메리가 그를 위로하고 모든 것이 잘 될 것이라고 말하는 꿈을 꾸었다. 그 아름다움과 메시지로 세대를 위로하는 곡이다.
폴 매카트니가 꿈속에서 어머니 '메리 매카트니'를 만났을 때 그의 어머니가 '내버려 둬 / 순리에 맡겨라(Let it be)'라는 말을 했고, 그 꿈을 기반으로 쓰인 곡이다. 노래 내용 역시 폴이 꿈속에서 들은 말과 동일하게 어려운 때라도 순리에 맡기라는 의미를 담고 있다. 그런데 대한민국에서는 'Mother Mary'를 성모 마리아로 번역하여 CCM으로 인식하는 경우가 적지 않은데, 폴 매카트니 본인이 인터뷰를 통해 Mary가 본인의 어머니를 가리키는 것임을 밝힘.
